Q&A with Illustrator, What Katie Drew

Q&A with Illustrator, What Katie Drew

We recently screen printed some seriously awesome t-shirts for London based Illustrator, What Katie Drew. Her illustrations really caught our eye, so we thought we’d do a little Q&A with Katie to find out a bit more about her. And what a lovely little chat we had!

Your illustrations are both charming and thought provoking – especially the pieces related to health. What work are you most proud of?
All my work is fun to work on and makes me proud but most recently my work with Mark Owen was especially special to me as I was part of the full process. I worked with him on the more creative visual side of his solo album The Art of Doing Nothing. He had such good ideas and I was able to be part of that with him. It was an amazing brief as he was open to my silly ideas, which meant I could push much of my personality into the illustrations.

Who is someone you would love to work with?
I just did the cover of the Big Issue which has given me the bug to do more editorial work. New Scientist and Vogue are both dream Clients – they both parallel my style nicely I’d say – contemporary, intelligent and like to push things.

What made you break away from a career in Advertising to pursue your passion?
Like my mum says.. don’t just dream your dreams.

“When I was growing up I wanted to be…”
..A zoologist. I have instead settled for two naughty cats.

What Katie Drew

‘BEARDY’ Boys t-shirt. Limited edition screen printed tee.

What sets you apart from other people in your profession?
Arrgh, that’s a mean one! Well I like to think of what I do as an extension and expression of me so what I do is inevitably unique. My stuff can be pretty, pretty silly, pretty dark, pretty well thrown together and occasionally smart.

What music do you like to work to?
I listen to all types of music when I’m drawing. This week I’ve been listening to the new Vampire Weekend album and Josephine Oniyama but you can’t beat a bit of Johnny Cash and Rodriguez, they’re great lyricists which sometimes can spark ideas.

What can you not live without?
Yoga and you can’t beat a bit of pink lippy.

What Katie Drew

Best advice you have ever been given?
Aim with your heart, steer with your mind, and know that it always works.

We’ve recently had the pleasure of screen printing two of your beautiful illustrations onto some t-shirts. Our favourite being the hairy-legging skirt lifter! So great! What else can we expect to see available in your online shop?
Yes, two of my illustrations are now available on tees, a couple more tee designs are in the pipeline as well as some What Katie Drew screen prints. I’m really excited about the current designs and T-shirts. I hope everyone else loves them, you can buy them here if you do! (hint hint) haha… www.whatkatiedrew.com

You’ve worked with some awesome clients so far, what else are you working on at the moment?
Aside from getting prints together for the What Katie Drew shop I’m currently working on some artwork for an exciting new album cover, more work for the NHS and some illustrations for a children’
s book. Its all go!.. My desk is looking shamefully messy. Well actually, it always is.

DTG Printed T-Shirts for Other Shop X Gary Card

DTG Printed T-Shirts for Other Shop X Gary Card

We recently had the pleasure of direct to garment printing these stunning t-shirts for a collaboration between independent boutique Other Shop and Illustrator, Gary Card. Now, if your not familiar with either of these names, you need to head over to their respective sites pronto!

Other Shop Gary Card

Other Shop and Gary Card came together to create a collection of super collectable, limited edition t-shirts. The illustrations were hand drawn by Gary and were based on characters from the Richard Avedon book, ‘In the American West’. There were only three of each size in each style ever made.

These illustrations by Gary, are truly mesmerising. We can’t quite put our finger on why this is – maybe it’s the neon etched style of each portrait which is complimented perfectly by the black fabric. Each face tells a different story, the depth of colour and detail really is impressive.

Other Shop Gary Card

This line of tees fitted in perfectly with Other Shop’s aesthetic. Other Shop isn’t just a boutique, but also a space for contemporary art and design. Based in the heart of Soho, Other Shop provides a refreshing breath of air and an antidote to the surrounding corporate mainstays of Regent and Oxford Streets, promoting a unique experience. During Gary Card for Other launch, Gary wowed the guests with a show of live painting, by scaling up the various portraits right before peoples eyes.

Q&A with Supermundane a.k.a Rob Lowe

Q&A with Supermundane a.k.a Rob Lowe
As this is Icon Printing’s 100th blog post (*insert party popper here*), we thought we’d do something a little bit special. We got in touch with a seriously super designer, who goes by the name of Supermundane. His designs are anything but that!
How did you get started in Illustration and Graphic Design?

I trained in Graphic Design back in the early 90s and spent the first part of my career working in various design companies until my personal work got noticed and I was offered a job by SleazeNation magazine. Since then I’ve continued to work in magazines as well as various other illustration projects and personal art. I’ve always been interested in doing lots of things and experimenting, this is something I’m still doing everyday.

Q&A with Dan from Cherry Laundry

Q&A with Dan from Cherry Laundry

We had the pleasure of screen printing Daniel Dewhurst’s very awesome Cherry Laundry tees, which are based on 1950’s laundry nostalgia – yet with a Scottish twist! We’ve done a little question and answer session with him, finding out what inspired him to create this collection.

What’s the story behind Cherry Laundry and how did the name come about?
Cherry Laundry T-shirts are themed on my love of 1950’s laundry nostalgia (random…I know), I’ve always thought that launderettes are visually fantastic places that ooze coolness. Although, to an extent, they have been glamorised by Hollywood, I still love the idea of people conversing with one another while waiting for their clothes to be washed.

What artists/designers inspire you and why?
With regards to clothing brands I’m a big fan of Ted Baker, Ralph Lauren and Levi’s. I know these aren’t particularly original choices but they have a great sense of design and I like the way their clothes fit.

I’m a huge fan and would recommend everyone to check out Marcelo Burlon’s t shirts!

Artists – Otto Dettmer, Andy Warhol, Jill Calder – I have studied each of these artist at different stages of my education and I feel each have played a major role in my creative development especially Otto Dettmer (his art is seriously cool!)

What do you like most about being a part of the fashion/design industry?
I think first and foremost I enjoy being part of this industry because its been a fantastic way to explore and use my creativity.
I graduated in illustration and wasn’t 100% sure what to do with it but certainly since setting up the Cherry Laundry I’ve been able to explore areas of fashion which compliment my art.

Why did you choose to create your own T-shirt line?
It’s all rather simple…I love t shirts! I used to design my own when I was at uni but just as a hobby and then whilst I was traveling I decided I would give it a go as a career.

You have an awesome online store, where else do you sell your designs?
I usually sell on markets in north London as the Cherry Laundry fits in well with the vintage scene. My very first market I did was at Camden and from there I branched out to markets in Highgate, Brick Lane, Watford and many more. I have also found that once you start hitting the market scene you get a lot of offers to do different markets from other stall holders or people that hear about you through the markets you attend.

What’s your favourite website or blog at the moment?
I’m a big fan of the Dazed and Confused website (and magazine). With regard’s to blogs there’s a fantastic one called The Clothes Horse, it’s really well put together and very interesting with fantastic photography….I highly recommend giving it a read.

What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about coming up with their own collection of statement T-shirts?
I’ve found that using a theme that I love has really helped with setting up the Cherry Laundry. I would advise anybody thinking of setting up their own brand to pick a theme that they have an interest in would be a perfect way to start.

I would also say using quality garments is very important. I have found that especially when working on markets people love to try on your products and if the fit and feel isn’t right people wont buy. At the same time I realise that you need to work within your budget but if you can spend that little bit extra on the product I would highly recommend it.

Thanks Dan! This is all very useful stuff. If you’d like some more top tips on creating your own collection of t-shirts, check this out. Don’t forget – we’d always love to hear from you too! Check us out at www.iconprinting.com

A whole load of Red, White & Blue printed greatness brought to you by Crispin Finn.

A whole load of Red, White & Blue printed greatness brought to you by Crispin Finn.

As you’ll most definitely be aware (unless you’ve been living under a rock…) it is Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee this weekend. The UK is awash with Union Jack everything – you can’t move for red, white and blue. It is undoubtedly, cause for celebration – as the only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897 – so party on Ma’am (as in jam)!

So, at least there is good reason for this colour scheme to be absolutely everywhere at the moment. But imagine if everything you created and looked at on a daily basis was red, white and blue. This literally is the case for design duo Crispin Finn. Everything they produce is red white or blue, no tonal variations, nothing. Pretty amazing! They offer “quality design, illustration and goods released in limited quantity at affordable prices” – but there is no justification as to why they work to such a strict colour scheme. As a result, the work on their website ties together beautifully and their style really does lend itself to such restraints – almost giving the work a retro, 1950s feel…

One of our favourite items they’ve come up with is this “Hello my Name is” T-shirt, shown above. It’s a two colour screen print and comes with a washable pen for filling in the “sticker”. They’ve got an array of wonderful screen printed goodies available – from totes to tea towels.

Above, is a collaborative range of sweaters created by talented embroiderer Becky Hogg alongside Crispin Finn. These were inspired by vernacular shop signage of a time gone by. Digital embroidery is a service we offer at Icon Printing, so obviously these were another hit with us. Such great work!

Feel free to chat to us about screen printing and digital embroidery – we love it. We’re big on polo shirt printing london.

Claudia Doms is a graphic designer from Germany who is currently living and working in London. They were created in time for fashion week, promoting NEWGEN winner Mary Katrantzou and other up and coming fashion designers.

In 1993 the British Fashion Council created New Generation (NEWGEN), one of the world’s most internationally recognised talent identification schemes. NEWGEN continues to showcase and promote new designer businesses and since 2001 the scheme has been sponsored by Topshop.

Claudia has captured these bags really nicely – utilising everyday back drops for some, others are livened up by printed fabric swatches from the designers current collections.

Printed Garment Inspiration – ZOE KARSSEN

Printed Garment Inspiration – ZOE KARSSEN

Every once in a while a T-shirt line suddenly appears and proceeds to take the fashion world by storm. This is exactly what happened with the Dutch luxury, printed T-shirt brand Zoe Karssen a mere 18 months ago. The label is a creative partnership between Quince and Zoe Karssen, built on the foundations of cool, easy to wear fashion with a playful, rock n roll twist. The collection channels laid back chic and is an obvious hit.

I personally first came across the brand six months ago whilst on a trip to the ‘t-shirt capital’ that is Australia – well, they have the weather for it! I was enjoying a stroll down the very cool Chapel Street in Melbourne, when I came across a T-Shirt only boutique, called Black Books. Their selection of Karssen tees took pride of place along one wall, and it was love at first sight. Not only was I drawn to their irresistibly understated tongue-in-cheek slogans and bold imagery, but the detail that came with it – even though they initially seemed so low-key and well…simple.

There was the topstitching details, unfinished edges and drop hems to the reverse of some, the pared down colour pallet and my favourite touch – the use of screen printing on the front inside of the garment. This gave a wonderful subtle, almost preworn look to the designs. Each design felt different, carrying its own selection of quirks with it. I had great difficulty in whittling my choices down and not immediately walking out with every single style they had.

It’s no wonder they’ve been picked up by big retailers like Liberty, Net-a-Porter and Harrods. The collection delivers a healthy injection of super-cool “I just threw this on” to any outfit.
